Celebrating the Enduring Impact of the Arabella and Henry Huntington Heritage Society

“I have been involved with The Huntington and its research programs for over 60 years and believe that among humanities institutions in this region, The Huntington is unrivaled. It is unmatched in terms of the strength of the collections and its contributions to scholarship over the last 100 years. It is the Queen of the Humanities—peerless. Helping it to maintain this position is the reason I joined the Heritage Society.”
—Dr. Robert C. Ritchie, Senior Research Associate, former W.M. Keck Foundation Director of Research at The Huntington, and Member of the Heritage Society

When Henry and Arabella Huntington signed the trust document that transformed their private estate into a nonprofit institution, they set an example of an exceptional spirit of generosity, which has been followed by a community of donors who hold the institution’s mission close to their hearts.

Beginning in 1991, donors who make gifts to The Huntington by way of bequests and planned gifts have been recognized through the Arabella and Henry Huntington Heritage Society. The recent 30-year milestone presents a wonderful opportunity to thank Members of the Heritage Society for their foresight, generosity, and commitment to sustaining the future of The Huntington—a place where nature, art, literature, and history continue to engage, inspire, and inform.

“In giving my library to the State of California, I feel that I am really giving it to the nation. Those who have devoted so much time to making the various collections which I have bought would undoubtedly feel it a matter of great satisfaction if they could know that their labors and their devotion will be, in the future, of such help to those who will use the Library for the ends for which I have meant it. Furthermore it should appeal to them, as it does to me, that the collection is there for all time, never to be dispersed.”
